Happy Easter, feat. 2True & JENsations

Hello lovely people of the internet! Not a very in-depth post for you today as I am still not fully recovered from the lurgy, and have sort of lost my motivation and passion for nails at the moment, stupid germs :( However, it is Easter (or just Sunday if, like me, you are not religious, but you know.... Hard to avoid it!), and I have at least made the effort to give myself a fitting manicure for the occasion..... On newly-shortened nails, humph :(

I used two coats of 2True Colour Quick Nail Polish in "Shade 15", a very, very pale blue creme:

On top of which I added one coat of JENsations "Rainbow Sprinkles", and finished with Rimmel LycraPro Matte Finish top coat (it's amazing):

And there you have it, Easter egg nails!

I hope you are all well, and thank you for not deserting me! I can't promise I'll be back to regular blogging just yet, but I did want to at least let you all know I'm still here, and that I will be back for good eventually.

Thanks for reading, and please come back again soon :) x

Monday, 25 March 2013

Hi everybody. Sorry for my blogging absence recently. Just wanted to explain myself - what started off as a particularly nasty cold last week has progressed into something quite a bit worse. As some of you know I have other health conditions anyway and a lousy immune system at the best of times, so this has hit me like a tonne of bricks and it's going to take me a while to get over it. I'm sorry to have neglected my blog, but I hope you can understand. I miss you all lovely followers, and I hope to be back soon, but it could be a while yet. And yes, my nails are extremely naked and will be for the foreseeable future!

Take care folks, catch you all again soon xx

Nails Inc "Bayswater Road"

Ooohhhh mama I'm in love!!! Another new Nails Inc shade for you today, "Bayswater Road". It's a teal jelly base crammed full of golden-green shimmer. It creates the most beautiful emerald green look on the nail and I think I might even go so far as to say it's my new favourite green shimmer!! It is almost duochrome - if viewed at a very oblique angle, the blue tint to the base really comes to life. Formula is flawless. It looks in the bottle as though it's going to be a bit wishy washy, but it is well pigmented, not too runny, and perfectly opaque in two coats. I have a feeling that it will stain like buggery though, as this sort of shade tends to, so I have doubled up on base coat to be on the safe side - I will let you know how well that worked tomorrow!

Pictures show two coats plus base & top coat:

I found it quite difficult to photograph the true colour accurately - this is as close as I could get, and nearly spot-on, but it is slightly more green in reality.

Do you like jewel-toned nails? I love them, and always have done!

China Glaze "Re-Fresh Mint"

I have to tell you, I am SO in love with pale green cremes at the moment. Today's polish is one of two along those lines that I have acquired in the past 48 hours! China Glaze "Re-Fresh Mint", while by no means new to the polish world, is brand new to me. I'd been looking for the perfect very pale icy green creme for a long time. Having narrowed my choices down to two, I eventually went for this one (the other being Essie "Mint Candy Apple", which I turned down because I felt it was too blue and not pale enough). I am so pleased I chose this one, it is everything I was looking for - pale, green, gentle, beautiful. Formula, for a pale pastel with such a lot of white in it, is surprisingly good - a little bit runny, but otherwise easy to apply, and flawless with two coats.

Pictures show two coats, no top coat:

After I applied this, I then added a coat of Barry M "Diamond Glitter", but I just can not get a decent picture of it! It looks sooo pretty, but this is all I could manage:

As you can sort of see, "Diamond Glitter" is a mixture of different sized silver holographic glitters and it looks beautiful over pale colours like this. It's similar to OPI "Which Is Witch?" but without the tiny bar glitter.

What do you think? Do you go through phases of liking a certain colour/finish etc.?

Nails Inc "Hyde Park Square"

I'm so happy, I have so many brand new nail polish babies all of a sudden that I don't even know what to do with myself! I've scrapped my entire polish schedule for the next week at least so I can get through them all, hooray! Here is one of them: Nails Inc "Hyde Park Square" is an absolutely amazingly bright neon pink creme. It has the faintest hint of a blue undertone to it, but I feel it leans far more to the warm side. Formula is actually pretty nice for a neon - it's not a sheer, runny mess that needs a bazillion coats or white undies. It's fair to say it's a little bit streaky, but I applied two generous coats and they covered pretty well. As with all neons, it does dry matte, so a top coat is a must.

Pictures show two coats plus base & top coat:

I really struggled to capture both the colour and the brightness accurately - in order to get somewhere close with neons, I adjust the white balance, which in turn makes my skin tone look a bit sickly - don't worry, there's nothing wrong with me ;)

What do you think? Are you a fan of neon polishes?

Barielle "Shannon's Attitude"

Recently, one of my fellow nail polish addict friends - a lovely lady named Jemma - entered a competition run by Color4Nails (a fantastic place to buy nail polish at great prices) wherein she had to refer a friend and say why she chose that friend and why she felt she deserved to win. Well Jemma chose to refer me, and she decided that if she won, she would send the prizes on to me for me to blog about. Lo and behold, she did win, and the prizes arrived today! I am so grateful to Jemma and to Color4Nails for this opportunity! So, here we have the first of my two prizes: Barielle "Shannon's Attitude". It's a very sheer, purple-tinted jelly base with tiny holographic glitter particles and larger, chunky, purple holographic strand glitter. It was very easy to apply, the sheer base wasn't streaky or patchy, and I didn't have to fish around for particles - they are evenly dispersed and don't clump together. I felt it would look best layered over a corresponding colour, so I applied it over 2True Colour Quick Nail polish in "Shade 14", a very pale lilac creme.

Pictures show two coats of "Shannon's Attitude" over the 2True lilac, with base & top coat:

And a shot of 2True Colour Quick "Shade 14" on its own, two coats, no top coat:

I absolutely love "Shannon's Attitude", it looks like thousands of tiny purple fireworks exploding on my nails!

Do you have much luck with competitions? I hardly ever win anything, so this was really special to me!

Faffy Spam!

Scheduled Special Post Alert!

I have been too much of a scatter-brain to blog about my most recent forays into faffage at the time of doing them, so here is a treat: everything I've done over the last month or so but have neglected to blog! Of course, if you're a member of All Things Nails or you "Like" me on Facebook, then you've probably seen most of these already. Mostly stamping (as you can see, I'm still learning), with a very few other bits and bobs in between!

L'Oreal Resist & Shine Titanium "Navy Velvet/700"

Today's polish is a bit of a mouthful to say! "Navy Velvet", also known by the number "700" is from L'Oreal's Resist & Shine Titanium range. It is a shade which I feel everybody should have in their collection - a classic, deep navy shimmer which is just scintillating in the sunshine. The formula is really good - very densely pigmented but not thick, just the right consistency, and a perfect two coater. The brush, however, I really don't like. It is long and flat, and the bristles are very fine and soft, floppy even - this creates turbulence in the brush while applying the polish, which in turn causes air bubbles to form. However, the annoyingly shaped over-cap on the lid is removable to reveal a small, cylindrical, ergonomic brush handle underneath for ease of application, which is to be commended.

Pictures show two coats plus base & top coat:

Do you like shades like this? I have done ever since I was very young - to me, this colour is the epitome of all things great about nail polish and my first ever nail polish was a dark navy shimmer!

Nails Inc "Bury Walk"

After a deep, dark manicure yesterday, I've gone for something completely the opposite today! Nails Inc "Bury Walk" is an ethereal, pale grey slightly sheer base with peachy bronze shimmer shot through - it creates such an other-worldly look, especially with it being not entirely opaque. It's a neutral with something a little bit extra. Formula, while somewhat sheer, still covers adequately with two coats - yes, there is minimal VNL but I feel that adds to the over-all appearance. Other than that, it is easy to apply, not too thick, not too thin, just right.

Pictures show two coats with base coat, but no top coat:

And, because I just can't get enough of delicate neutrals with glittery top coats, I then applied one coat of OPI "Which Is Witch?", and finished with top coat:

What do you think? I think that if fairies were real, this is what their wings would look like ^_^

China Glaze "Smoke & Ashes"

Hi lovely World, and happy Friday! Anybody got any exciting plans for the weekend? I don't.  I'd rather stay at home and paint my nails anyway! On to which, today's manicure features China Glaze "Smoke & Ashes", a beautiful polish which is sadly very camera shy! It's a black base with green and blue glass-fleck shimmer. It's really deep and mysterious, the rich black base tones down the shimmery bits so it's like you are looking at them through smoked glass - you can really see why they named it "Smoke & Ashes"! Formula is drippy, so be sure to wipe the excess polish off the stalk first, and it is a top coat eater, but other than that it's fine - extremely well pigmented and a definite one-coater, (I would always recommend you apply two coats though, I feel it provides more depth and longer wear).

Pictures show two coats plus base & top coat:

And here is a flash-lit shot to bring out the sparkle (it really is a pain in the backside to photograph!!)

I tried my best to capture it accurately but it just was having none of it - you'll have to trust me when I say it really is a beautiful polish, if you like black and glitzy things :)

Nails Inc "Balmoral"

It worked, folks! The sun came out and stayed out all day, and it has actually been warm! Hooray!! I suppose I should have chosen a more appropriate colour to celebrate, but I've had today's beauty lined up for a while and I really, really wanted to wear it! Nails Inc "Balmoral" was from a limited edition "Royal Collection" released to celebrate the wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton, and then re-released for the Queen's Jubilee last year. I didn't buy for either of those reasons, but purely because of the colours. "Balmoral" is a slightly warm-toned nude beige creme. It is very close to my skin-tone but not identical - I have yet to find my perfect "mannequin hands" match! Formula is as you would expect from a Nails Inc creme polish - perfect. Well pigmented, smooth, easy to apply, opaque in two coats, very quick drying.

Pictures show two coats plus base & top coat:

What do you think of this sort of nail colour? Apparently mannequin hands will be a big trend this year, so I'm happy - I love it!

Models Own "Bloo Bloo"

Hello internet! I'm still trying desperately to influence the weather by wearing spring-like shades, but I think I'm fighting a losing battle - while I was painting my nails this afternoon, a snow storm with added thunder and lightning was raging outside :( But my nails defy the misery that mother nature is inflicting upon us! Models Own "Bloo Bloo" is a cool, pastel, baby-blue shade. In the bottle it has the subtlest navy shimmer, but this becomes rather lost on the nail.... It is somewhat evident that it's not simply a flat creme, but not necessarily why or how. Formula is slightly chalky and and dries lumpy, but a good top coat levels it out. It is opaque in two careful, generous coats, however I might recommend three thin coats for a smoother, more even finish.

Pictures show two coats plus base & top coat:

What do you think? Last time I wore this, I wasn't sure if liked it, but looking at it now I've no idea why - it's adorable!!

Barielle "Polished Princess"

Is it spring yet?? I don't know about you, but this weather is hacking me off. I'm no fan of scorching hot weather but seriously, this is enough. I need the sun! I want to be able to leave the house without having to put on a dozen layers first! So with that in mind, I've gone for a truly springy, zingy colour on my nails today in the hope it'll bring about a change.... Or at least cheer me up! Barielle "Polished Princess" is a fresh, grassy, almost acid green with a beautiful shimmer - the particles of which aren't just green, but seemingly red and gold too... Formula-wise it is without problems. Nicely pigmented, applies well, opaque in two coats.

Pictures show two coats plus base & top coat:

What do you think? It screams "SPRING!!!" to me, so I'm hoping the weather will get the message soon too!

2True Colour Quick "Shade1"

Today I have a lovely, happy, bright polish to show you, from 2True's Colour Quick range. "Shade 1" is a vibrant, blue-toned fuchsia creme polish My pictures don't really show the fact that it's a little bit sheer and milky and my nail line is still somewhat visible, so I should really have applied three thin coats as opposed to the two medium-thick coats I did apply.

Pictures show two coats plus base & top coats:

I'm quite sad to say that I will be shortening my nails drastically this evening (or at least in the next few days - I might need to work up to it!) - they have given up the ghost completely, damned winter :(

Nails Inc "York Street"

Hi world! I have the last from my little selection of blue polishes to show you today - the poor loser with the least votes! Don't let that put you off though, it is a lovely colour. Nails Inc "York Street" is a bright aqua creme with just a very feint hint of dirtiness to it. To compare it to some of the other similar colours I've worn recently, it's more blue than Nails Inc "Haymarket", and less clean-looking than Barry M "Blueberry Icecream". Formula is fine but, as my bottle of this is a miniature, I had to take care with application to avoid dragging.

Nails Inc "Stratton Street"

Hello lovely internet! How are ya? I have another blue polish to show you today - the penultimate choice from my little blue selection. Nails Inc "Stratton Street" was, I believe, a QVC UK exclusive colour. It's a deep, very purple-toned navy creme with a very, very slight hint of jelly to it. Formula-wise, it's absolutely terrible. I struggled with it the last time I wore it and if anything it seems to have worsened. It's watery, drippy, streaky, and patchy. To add insult to injury, my brush is a bit wonky, so I had a hard time applying it. I managed to get it good with three coats but those three coats were arduous and very stressful.

Pictures, then, show three coats plus base & top coat:

What do you think? Are you willing to forgive a bad formula for the sake of a nice colour? Luckily for Stratton Street I *love* the colour - if I felt anything less for it, I'd have given up on it long ago.

Nails Inc "Ryder Street"

Happy Friday, everybody! Today's manicure is another blue one, and another Nails Inc too (unsurprisingly - Nails Inc outweighs any other brand in my collection by a huge margin)! "Ryder Street" is a really pretty, pale icy blue foil shimmer. So pale and icy that it's almost silver, but not quite. Formula-wise, it's a bit sheer - first coat goes on patchy, but the second coat levels things out. Care needs to be taken to avoid it dragging, though.

Pictures show two coats plus base & top coat:

What do you think? In my strange mind it's quite "robotic" looking, and the sort of colour you might see in the make-up and costumes of sci-fi shows from the '60s. I love it!

Nails Inc "Baker Street"

Following on from yesterday's post, I have another blue polish to show you today, again chosen by my friends over at All Things Nails. "Baker Street" was one of Nails Inc's runaway successes last year and I think if I was forced to choose, I would name it as my favourite Nails Inc polish. It's a vivid cobalt blue creme which is bordering on neon. It's mind-blowing, seriously, I still find myself cooing over it despite having worn it many times over the past year. Formula is fine - first coat is a bit runny and streaky but a second coat always levels things out to perfection.

Pictures show two coats plus base & top coat, but boy oh boy what a pain it is to photograph! Imagine slightly darker, way more vivid, and far more cobalt:

Are you a fan of Baker Street? I think my cat Lillian likes it a lot - she even helped me watermark my photos :)

Rimmel "Azure"

I'm gripped with indecision lately so, knowing only that I wanted to wear a blue polish, I threw it open to the lovely members of All Things Nails - I gave a selection of blues, and here is what they chose! "Azure" is from Rimmel's I <3 Lasting Finish range of nail polishes. It's a vibrant azure blue with a lovely shimmer. It's a bit sheer, but careful application allowed me to get away with two coats. This was one of my early "just getting into nail polish" purchases and has remained a favourite ever since.

Pictures show two coats, no top coat (for reasons which will become clear):

I realised, as I was gathering my bits and bobs to apply Azure, that the new polish I bought yesterday would go perfectly over the top, so here is Azure with one coat of 2True Glitterati polish in "Shade 1" over the top, with top coat:

What do you think? Whilst I really like the 2True polish, I kind of wish I hadn't faffed, and just left Azure to shine in its own glory :/

Nails Inc "Upper Berkeley Street"

*Sigh*...... Today has just not been my day. I was hoping to have something pretty awesome to show you today but, as is too often the case, my expectations were too high - I tried doing a multi-coloured stamped harlequin design over a gold base but, well, let's just say I failed and leave it at that! That was just one in a long line of mini disasters today which have left me feeling a bit fed-up.

Anyway, I couldn't put up with bare nails having removed the manicure fail, so I picked out Nails Inc "Upper Berkeley Street" to put on instead. It's a dusty, rosy pink creme with a hint of lilac. Very understated yet elegant colour - I think it would be quite "work appropriate" as it's in no way a screaming out loud in your face pink. Formula was perfection, but still I fail - as I was setting up to photograph this, I somehow managed to get a tissue stuck to one nail which smudged it. Badly. By then I just couldn't be bothered, so I licked a finger, pushed the smudgies back into place and bunged another coat of top coat on.

Pictures show two coats, plus base & top coat:

So there you go. I hope you've all had a less annoying day than I have!

China Glaze "Let's Groove" & OPI "I Lily Love You"

Hello dears! Today's manicure comes courtesy of my lovely friend Hayley, who a few weeks ago arranged for a little gift to be sent to me - a mini bottle of OPI "I Lily Love You", which really meant a lot to me! I've decided to wear it today, over one of the best purple shimmer polishes ever, China Glaze "Let's Groove".

Here's Let's Groove on it's own - two coats, no top coat:

And here are two coats of I Lily Love You over Let's Groove, with Nubar Diamont top coat:

What do you think? I really love the different colours in I Lily Love You, and love even more how it can look totally different depending on what's underneath it! Thank you Hayley, I lily love it (I know, that was bad, sorry)!!

Rimmel "Ready, Aim, Paint!"

Who loves red nails? I love red nails!!! "Ready, Aim, Paint!" is from Rimmel's 60 Seconds line of nail polishes. It is a very bright, pigmented, cool-toned red creme polish. Typical formula for the type of colour - it's very densely pigmented but still suffers from a visible nail line, so on my long nails, three coats is required for full coverage. Fine by me though - I wouldn't put up with it for many colours but boy is this one worth it!! Must just say though, the brush in my bottle is really badly cut - jagged edges ahoy, not fun :/

Pictures show three coats plus base & top coat:

What do you think? I love it. It's so vibrant and to me it's pretty much perfect, it's a real "air hostess" red, I think!
